Improving mental wellbeing in older age

A series of FREE events, aimed at raising awareness about maintaining mental wellbeing into older age, has been running at venues across the Borders for the last few months.

Organised by the Borders Care Learning Network (BCLN), the Keys to Keeping Well in Older Age workshops are open to everyone.

“The two hour workshops are looking at what promotes and maintains good mental wellbeing in older age,” explained Meg Roper of BCLN. “The sessions, which have been held at venues throughout the Borders,  are open to anyone in the local community.”

They aim to give people an opportunity to:

  • understand mental wellbeing in older age
  • get the chance to consider what affects their own mental wellbeing
  • find ways to improve mental wellbeing
  • develop an action plan to improve the quality of mental wellbeing.

The remaining sessions will take place on 21st March in the following venues:

Community & Arts Centre, Jedburgh, 10am – noon

New Horizons, Hawick, 2pm-4pm

Selkirk Rugby Club, 6pm-8pm.

Also in February and March, we will be working with groups, organisations and workplaces to help them consider their own work practices and whether they are promoting wellbeing for their clients. This will be a three hour session and we will be attending various workplaces and other venues to take attendees through the programme.  We will provide support to help those taking part to develop tailored action plans for promoting good mental wellbeing. Contact us if you would like us to work with you on this project.

After March, we will be training and supporting volunteers to become wellbeing champions. These volunteers will continue the work within their communities and groups and carry forward the approaches learned.
